Artist Biography: Rod Dudley (b. 1935)

Rod Dudley is a distinguished Australian sculptor whose career bridges continents and artistic traditions. Born in Melbourne in 1935, Dudley honed his craft at Caulfield Technical College and Melbourne University between 1959 and 1961. His artistic journey took a pivotal turn in 1965 when he was awarded an Italian Government Scholarship to study at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan under the tutelage of Marino Marini .

Settling in Besozzo on Lake Maggiore, Italy, Dudley established a studio that became a crucible for his innovative explorations in sculpture. His work is characterized by a fusion of traditional wood carving techniques with contemporary themes, often reflecting on identity and societal roles . Dudley’s sculptures have been showcased in prestigious exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale and the Adelaide Festival, and are held in esteemed collections such as the Adelaide Festival Centre .
