Dating between 1910 and 1921, this genuine early 20th-century piece features Tokanabe's signature stippled, matte black charcoal finish. Molded in high relief around the bulbous body are charming raised designs of long-billed birds nestled among branches, complemented by two elegantly swept structural handles. Because it bears the indented character seal and the "MADE IN NIPPON" stamp on the base, we can reliably date this piece to prior to 1921—before US and international import laws required the text to be changed to "Made in Japan."
