This striking framed relief is more than just a portrait — it’s a deeply personal piece of Australian history. Modelled in rich, bronze-toned plaster, the work captures the thoughtful expression of Dr. William Maloney, an influential figure in early 20th-century Australian politics. A passionate reformer and long-serving Member of the House of Representatives, Maloney fought for social justice, workers’ rights, and access to healthcare well before such causes were fashionable.
The artist, Charles Castermans, was not a commissioned sculptor — but a Belgian jeweller and close personal friend of Maloney’s. The intimacy of that connection shows in the delicate modelling of the features, the quiet dignity of the pose, and the care with which the image is framed. This was no public commission — it was a labour of friendship, a tribute crafted by someone who truly knew the man behind the politics.
On the reverse, a handwritten inscription dated Friday 13th April, 1973, confirms its lineage. It was signed by Kay D. Gerber (née Carter), the great-granddaughter of Dr. Maloney, who writes that this cast was made from life, treasured by the family, and handed down through generations. The circular frame, finished with a carved and gilded border, adds richness and warmth to the composition — making it as beautiful to display as it is historically significant.
A truly one-of-a-kind piece for collectors, historians, or those who believe the objects we surround ourselves with should tell stories — not just fill space. This is a conversation piece, a family heirloom, and a quiet window into Australia’s political and artistic past.
