This hand-carved fish brooch is cut from a single piece of natural pearl oyster shell. Tilt it in the light and it shifts from molten orange and gold to violet, silver-blue and green. It’s a snapper-like fish with a confident humped profile, and every fin ray, gill line and dorsal spine has been engraved by hand. The eye is a neatly drilled pupil. The light does the rest: no two angles show the same colours.
The reverse keeps the shell’s natural dark outer layer, with striated chocolate-and-ebony markings and one small natural growth mark. It’s a reminder that this began life on the ocean floor and wasn’t made in a mould. A silver-tone bar pin with safety catch is mounted across the back.
