Rare early municipal sign from the City of Mitcham, South Australia, reading:
“HORSES ARE NOT ALLOWED ON THIS RESERVE – OFFENDERS PROSECUTED”
This original metal sign features embossed lettering beneath layers of worn paint and rust, with the bold lower line still clearly legible. Measuring approx. 60cm x 45cm, it likely dates from the early 20th century (c.1920s–1930s), based on the typography, formal language, and construction style.
A rare and authentic piece of South Australian history, it reflects the bygone era of council regulation when horses were still a common form of transport. The “City of Mitcham” reference points to one of Adelaide’s oldest municipalities, first established in 1853.
Perfect for collectors of antique signage, equestrian history, or local heritage memorabilia. Also makes a striking rustic decor piece for a shed, studio, or vintage display.
