This is Burleigh Ware’s famous Golfer jug, a reissue of the 1930s Art Deco design that is among the most collectable of the Burleigh figural jugs. It was made by Burgess, Dorling & Leigh at the historic Middleport Pottery in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, using the original moulds and the traditional hand-painted decoration.
The handle is a full figure of a golfer at the top of his backswing. He wears a checked flat cap and plus-fours, and a teal pullover. The body shows a relief-moulded fairway scene with cypress trees, a rolling green and a timber fence. There is a golf bag with clubs on the reverse. The jug is finished in the classic Burleigh yellow glaze, with a green interior and a hand-painted dot pattern around the rim.
It makes a great piece for any golfer, or for collectors of English Art Deco–style pottery.
