A large antique European mirror back, hand-carved around the turn of the 20th century in the Baroque Revival style. The highlight is the pair of eagles perched at each shoulder. They are carved fully in the round, with wings raised and spread, every feather individually detailed, and heads turned in profile. They are true sculptural pieces in their own right and give the mirror real presence from every angle.

Below, a pair of large stylised fish with finely carved scales anchor the base on carved plinths. At the top, a crest of fruit and flowers rises from a fluted urn between scrolling volutes and rosettes. Quilted lattice panels, beaded borders and acanthus drops complete the frame around an oval bevelled mirror.

Originally the upper section of a substantial sideboard or dressing chest, it now works as a standalone statement piece. It can stand on a console, buffet or mantel, or be securely wall-mounted.

The piece shows its age honestly. Fine shrinkage lines run along the original solid-board joints, and the deep carving holds a rich, dark patina in every recess. The mirror plate shows light silvering consistent with age. It has been maintained over its life, with a later backboard and re-fixed eagles keeping it sound and display-ready.

Dimensions: approx. 115 cm W × 124 cm H.

A strong piece for collectors of carved eagles and bird motifs, Continental carved furniture, or anyone after an antique mirror with real presence.
