Victorian Ambrotype Portrait in Velvet-Lined Case – Circa 1860s
This exquisite antique ambrotype features a seated older woman, posed with a card in hand, wearing a detailed lace collar and bonnet—classic fashion of the 1860s. The image is mounted behind glass and set in a gold-embossed brass mat, all encased within a beautifully preserved, leather-bound folding travel case lined with richly embossed velvet.
The case measures approx. 23.5cm wide when fully open and 14cm high. The ambrotype is in excellent condition with beautiful contrast and clarity. The outer case and clasp are intact, with mild wear consistent with age.
Ambrotypes, a mid-19th century photographic process, were a successor to daguerreotypes. Unlike daguerreotypes, ambrotypes were made using a collodion glass negative, backed with dark material to appear positive.
A rare and visually striking survivor of early photographic history—perfect for collectors of antique ephemera or Victorian decor.
